†Martin was born on 27th February 1954 in Pretoria. He attended Brooklyn Primary School (where he was Head Boy in 1966) and Pretoria Boy’s High School (Prefect in 1971). He obtained his Matric with distinctions in Mathematics, Physical Science and Latin.

Immediately after school he did a year of compulsory national service in the SA Air Force, where he represented them in athletics as a sprinter. He studied Civil Engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, graduating BSc (Eng) in 1976. He was employed at the National Institute for Transport and Road Research of the CSIR in 1977 and 1978, when he resigned in order to enter full time Christian ministry in the Anglican Church. He was ordained Deacon in December 1980 and Priest in December 1981 - both at St Alban's Cathedral in Pretoria.

In 1979 he married Sarah (nee Simpson) and they have three children: Katy (1983), Tasha (1985) and Jeremy (1988). Sarah died in 2009 as a result of a malignant brain tumour. Tasha married Karl Robert in 2010 and Jeremy married Fiona in 2015.

†Martin completed BTh (1982) and BTh (Hons) (1995) degrees at the University of South Africa, graduating with distinction in both cases. He was ordained deacon in December 1980, Priest in December 1981 and Consecrated Bishop on 5th February 2000. He has served in a number of churches and capacities in the Anglican Church of Southern Africa (ACSA):

†Martin held a number of portfolios and responsibilities during his time in the Diocese of Pretoria, including: Diocesan Youth Convenor; Diocesan Youth Chaplain; Archdeacon of Pretoria East; Archdeacon to the Ordinary. He served on numerous committees, and represented the Diocese at Provincial meetings.

Since becoming Bishop, †Martin has been Liaison Bishop for the Anglican Students’ Federation, as well as for Anglican Renewal Ministries. He is Chairman of SOMA (Sharing of Ministries Abroad) Southern Africa. He is a member of the ACSA Liturgical Committee. He serves as Chairman and Liaison Bishop of “Growing the Church” in the ACSA and Chairman and Liaison Bishop of “Anglicans Ablaze”. He has represented ACSA at various meetings and consultations, including the Lausanne Congress in Cape Town in 2010 and the  Fourth Global South Encounter of the Anglican Communion.

†Martin is an active musician who play guitar and keyboards (trained in piano), writes and records music, and loves to lead worship.
